The state government is one step closer to setting up Indian
Institute of Information and Technology (IIIT) campus in Maharashtra.
The state administration has zeroed in on three sites in Pune-Chakan, Shirur and
Khed for the campus, to be built on public-private partnership model, say officials
from the higher and technical education department.
CM Prithviraj Chavan and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar have been informed about the three
sites. The state government will soon take a final decision on the issue, Rajesh
Tope, minister for higher and technical education said.
To set up the campus, 100 acre of land is required. Those interested in building
the campus were finding it difficult to get hold of such a big plot at one stretch,
so the department relaxed the norms. According to the new norms, one will now need
50 acre at one stretch for setting up the campus and the rest in nearby areas for
facilities like a hostel and training centre, the minister said.
Several firms have shown interest in setting up the campus. The department received
15 applications through expression of interest, Tope added. The project will cost
Rs. 128 crore. Of this, the Union government will contribute will be Rs. 65 crore
and Rs. 40 crore will be funded by the state. The rest will have to be borne by
the firm which will set up the campus, Tope said.
Meanwhile, a senior official attached to the higher and technical education department
said that Maharashtra might miss the opportunity for setting up the campus because
of administrative delays.
