Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) launches a new programme to develop a pool of skilled elementary school teachers. Reema Kaur Reports
At a time when teacher training has become a national agenda, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has launched a new programme. The School of Education (SOE), IGNOU, is offering a two year diploma in elementary education (DElEd) for in service teachers from the academic session starting July 2011.
"It is a national level programme designed to enhance the understanding and competencies of in service teachers at an elementary level so that they can carry out the teaching learning process effectively. The programme is expected to strengthen the professional development of teachers and a sense of commitment in them towards educating children, "says ML Koul, programme coordinator, School of Education (SOE), IGNOU.
The course is designed and developed by the faculty of SOE in close collaboration with a highly experienced group of experts from leading educational institutions in the country including National Council for Teachers Education (NCTE). The course contains elements, which have been recommended by the National Policy on Education 1986, National Curriculum Framework for Teacher Education 2009, National Curriculum Framework 2005 and Right to Education Act 2009.
Koul informs, "The material is designed in self-instructional format. It is a 64-credit programme with more than 40% of practical content. The programme focuses on education through information communication technology (ICT). The curriculum has been integrated with ICT and students will have options of taking classes through teleconferencing, radio counselling, and computer based learning, among others. "The university is exploring options of reaching out to candidates in the rural areas through cable network. The programme is open to in-service untrained permanent teachers teaching in government schools (primary/elementary), from class I to VIII. The aspirants should have a minimum qualification of +2 or above.
"The examinations will be held in the annual mode and mechanisms have been adopted for continuous student evaluation. There is also an option for regular self assessment. During the course, students will have to complete three types of practical training, school based activities, workshop based activities and practice of teaching. The certification of all these practicals will be authenticated by the regional centre officers," added Koul.
Application forms for the programme will be available by June 2011. The session will begin from July 1. Students will have an option of completing the two year course, at the most, in four years.
