UoP vice chancellor, RK Shevgaonkar, to launch guidance book today 15th July 2011
In a bid to guide teachers who teach English language and
make the language easily accessible to the weakest student, two English professors
have edited a book, Unlock Their Future, a skills-based approach to teaching and
learning English.
The book will be formally launched by the University of Pune (UoP) vice chancellor,
RK Shevgaonkar, on Friday at Nivara, Navi Peth, at 6 pm.
The co-editors, Viney Kirpal, former head of the department of humanities and social
sciences in the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai and Shridhar Gokhale, former
professor of English at UoP, decided to bring out the book as they felt that several
teachers were ill-equipped to teach the language.
Speaking to DNA in the city on Thursday, the two professors said teaching and learning
English in India is in a mess. The professors said that their book would help teachers
get their teaching act straight. "The book enables teachers to simplify English
language and reach out to the weakest student," Kirpal said.
Kirpal recounted how, when she conducted a workshop for English teachers in 2007,
she came across some teachers who could not write in English correctly. Both professors
were of the opinion that English is a basic necessity in today's world.
"We have seen that students can write marginally well, but when it comes
to applying for jobs or facing interviews, they fumble. It is the responsibility
of teachers to instill confidence and skills in their students," said Kirpal.
