School Students will soon get tax lessons
In an attempt to promote tax payment; income tax (I-T) department
has decided to conduct seminars on the importance of paying tax in schools. The
announcement was made during an event organized to conclude the year-long celebrations
of 150 years of Income Tax in India in the city on Sunday, 24th July 2011.
Ela Bhatt, founder of Sewa, was the chief guest of the event which was attended
by senior income tax officials in Gujarat. Speaking on the occasion, I-T chief commissioner,
Gujarat R N Tripathi, said, From Rs 30 lakh tax collected when income tax was first
introduced in India in 1860 to Rs 4.4 lakh crore collections in 2010-11, I-T department's
150 years journey has been a partner in the country's growth at every stage.
A declamation competition was organized at the event and students from 10 schools
participated. A film,' Journey and growth of the department since 1860'was also
screened on the occasion. Talking about tax payers in Gujarat, Tripathi said, Gujarat
has been at the top in tax payment and the department overhauls its capacity every
day to serve tax payers in a better way. W e will soon set up five more single windows,
Ayekar Seva Kendras in Gujarat and an information kiosk will be put up at post offices
and different government buildings.
Bhatt said that there were only 3 crore tax payers in the country at present.
She emphasized that more people should pay their taxes honestly.
