Students protest fee overcharging

The students have lodged a formal complaint regarding the excess fee being charged by the college to the fee as well as admission committee members

Students of Nirma Engineering College and Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU) held demonstrations outside the office of the Akshay Mehta Fee Regulatory Committee at the LD Engineering College campus on Tuesday, 3rd Jan, 2012, alleging that the colleges were charging more fee than stipulated by the committee.

Students said that they were being asked to pay nearly double the fee mandated by the Fee Regulatory Committee which is illegal. Students pursuing engineering courses at Nirma University said they were asked to pay 1.57 lakh fee per annum, which was nearly double of the 75,000 - 80,000 permitted by the fee committee. Students of PDPU were also up in arms saying that the college made them pay 1.5 lakh per annum for two semesters while the fee is 75,000. This is cheating and should not be allowed. We come from middle class families. Admission and fee committee officials should ensure that action is taken so that poor students are not cheated, said a student.

The students have lodged a formal complaint regarding the excess fee being charged by the college to the fee as well as admission committee members. Students have also said that college authorities have threatened against making any noise over the issue saying that they will cancel their admissions. Officials of the admission committee said that the allegations leveled by the students are grave and an inquiry will be instituted. Action will also be taken if the colleges are found to have erred and violated the rules and regulations stipulated by the fee and admission committee.
