Akash Kamthans film Dekha Andekhi: Kal aur Kala has been selected for the 8th JEEVIKA:
Asia Livelihood Documentary Festival
What could have been a better acknowledgement of a students
project if not a recognition at an international level Basking in fame, DAIICT Gandhinagar
student Akash Kamthan is on a high ever since the selection of his documentary film
Dekha Andekhi : Kal aur Kala for the 8th JEEVIKA: Asia Livelihood Documentary Festival.
A second year student of Master in Design-Communication at Dhirubhai Ambani Institute
of Information and Communication Technology (DA-IICT), Akash produced the 25-minute
documentary under the guidance of Professor Madhumita Mazumdar. The movie will be
screened in New Delhi on August 27.
The documentary is about Sanganer block printing which is associated with a chhipa
community. Not just a mean of livelihood, the art has provided them a distinct identity.
The centuries old art is facing tough competition by hundreds of factories. It has
shaken the roots of hand block printing, said Akash.
THE VANISHING ART
Who are responsible for the vanishing of this craft which has a magnificent past
We the consumers, government officials or printers My documentary is an attempt
to make people aware of the art which is on the verge of even extinction, said the
student.
On May 3, Akash made a presentation on the film before the college jury which encouraged
him to send his documentary to film festivals as an entry for a wider public appearance.
It was my guide who told me about this film festival where I sent my entry
in the students category and it got selected, said Akash who hails from Jaipur and
has seen artists doing Sanganer block printing since childhood.
