medium students who took the class XI first semester chemistry exam on Saturday.
Smarting under severe criticism, Gujarat Secondary and Higher
Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) has decided to award 8 grace marks to Gujarati
medium students and 5 to English medium students who took the class XI first semester
chemistry exam on Saturday.
The tough question paper had triggered angry reactions from students and their parents,
who had gone to the extent of demanding action against the teacher responsible for
setting the paper.
Sources said that it is perhaps the first time that such high marks will be given.
The school board had constituted a panel of seven experts to look into the question
paper issue. Following the committee’s report, the school board concluded that the
paper did have many errors. The decision to award grace marks was taken on the basis
of the panel’s report, as well as, considering the representations by parents.

R. R. Varsani said that the Gujarati question paper had far more mistakes that English.
He also said that there were three erroneous questions of four marks in which two
options were correct. "We have decided to give marks to all those students who answered
one of the options," he said.

The Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) has demanded that the state government
should come out with proper guidelines and instructions on the semester system introduced
from this year for class XI and XII. Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi claimed
