State struggles to keep Medical Seats
State government’s dreams of increasing medical seats by
1,000 in the state within three to four years appear to have been dashed
with the Medical Council of India (MCI) denying permission to three new medical
colleges including those from Patan and Gotri. Health minister
Jay Narayan Vyas had expressed hopes of beginning
10 new medical colleges in the state in the coming three to four
years. However, forget about increasing the number of medical seats, the state is
now struggling to safeguard the existing seats as MCI carried out stringent inspections.
While it is being discussed openly that the state is being targeted due to its association
with ex-president of the MCI Ketan Desai, the student fraternity which had high
hopes of getting admission in the state are once again looking at other states including
Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka to secure their admission
in medicine. We had hopes that a few hundered more seats would be available in Gujarat
but this dream does not look to be materializing for the next couple of years, Rajasvi
Shah, an HSC (science) student said.
