UoP permits examiners to mark 180 answer sheets of engineering students per day
The University of Pune (UoP) has decided to allow examiners
to evaluate 180 answer scripts of students appearing for engineering examinations
in a day, instead of 120. The varsity made this move as it is facing paucity of
manpower to evaluate answer scripts.
Under the rules, UoP has to compulsorily declare the results within 45 days after
the completion of the examination.
Although UoP officials are tight-lipped on the issue, former senate member and professor
of chemistry of HV Desai College of Arts, Commerce and Science, Atul Bagul, confirmed
the developments.
"The quality of assessment of the answer scripts would suffer. It is very difficult
for evaluators to check 180 answer scripts thoroughly in a day," Bagul remarked.
Interestingly, two years back a committee was formed by erstwhile vice chancellor
of UoP, Narendra Jadhav, after some senate members raised the issue that instead
of checking 120 answer scripts in a day, some evaluators were assessing nearly 300.
And following an uproar in the senate, Jadhav appointed a committee under the chairmanship
of senate member, Nandkumar Nikam, to look into the matter.
"In that report the panel had found out that although the examination work, including
assessing the papers, is mandatory for concerned faculty members, only 40% of the
faculty members evaluated the answer sheets," Bagul said.
According to him, the report found that most of the engineering colleges affiliated
to UoP did not relieve their teachers for examination work. "So ultimately 40% of
the staff completed the work in 45 days," he said.
Bagul questioned why after the committee gave its report, UoP restricted it to issuing
show cause notices to the faculty members who did not take part in the examination.
He felt that strong action should have been taken to send a message to the teachers
about the importance of such work.
