English Medium Students fared well than the Gujarati medium students
Mathematics is the subject that claimed maximum victims.
1.62 lakh students failed in the subject in the SSC results announced on 2nd June 2011, Thursday.
English (Second Language) which is a lower level language for Gujarati medium students
was the second biggest slayer where 1.57 lakh students failed to score the mandatory
33 marks required to pass.
Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB)
officials said that the students have also fared poorly in Science and Technology
subjects with 1.29 lakh students failing in these subjects.
Of the students who have failed SSC exams this year, 40-50 per cent of the students
have failed in Math and Science.
What surprised the board officials greatly was that 68,000 students failed in Gujarati
(First Language) which is the mother tongue of Gujarati medium students. Experts
said that the poor performance of students in this subject is mainly due to lack
of attention paid to the subject by the students.
Gujarati language expert Manvendra Gohil said that most students do not prepare
for the Gujarati (FL) subject seriously as they think that they know the language
and will manage to prepare it at the last moment. Instead they give precedence to
other subjects thereby taking tuitions for them. At the end, the complete lack of
preparation leads a big number of students failing to score the minimum pass mark.
Officials said that English medium students posted 93.50 per cent result, while
Gujarati medium students posted 67.50 per cent result.
Principal of NR High School Sunanda Shah said that English medium students tend
to perform well in exams and have a higher pass percent, but they have fared badly
when it comes to figuring in the top rankers.
