Semester Based Exam System in GU Colleges
The age-old system of examination in undergraduate courses
will be done away with by the Gujarat University (GU) this year onwards.
A semester-based examination system is what will be initiated across colleges. A
special committee on medals is now being appointed by the university to suggest
ways of awarding students in the new semester system.
Earlier the system involved awarding gold medals at the end of every academic year.
We are pondering over whether to introduce gold medals at the end of every semester.
University academicians earlier had suggested to continue the existing system of
awarding at the end of every year.
The new system will involve a Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS) in all colleges
in Gujarat. A circular had been issued by the state education department on April
11 to all universities in this regard.
The CBCS is being pushed by University Grants Commission (UGC) which aims to completely
revamping the current higher education system by providing elective credits to students
who can opt for various inter-disciplinary courses. This means, a student studying
economics should be able to take up a course in music if he or she wishes to do
so and vice-versa.
The 23-page circular gives out the blueprint of how the CBCS system will be implemented
in all colleges, details about the semester system, curriculum, exam reforms and
evaluation methods.
The undergraduate students now will have to clear eight semesters. The first semester
will be from July to November, while the next semester will be from December to
April. Each semester will consist of 90 working days.
