OBC reserved seats had to be transferred to the general pool
The story of backward category students in the IITs is that
of bitter sweet success While close to 60% of OBC students made it to
the common merit list this year, along with general category students, 368 OBC reserved
seats had to be transferred to the general pool as the number of students from the
non-creamy layer was not enough to fill the quota.
An IIT official said: Many OBC and SC students were allotted seats based on their
common merit list rank, driving home the point that these candidates did not need
a handicap to get a seat at any of the 15 IIT's.
IIT-Kanpur director Sanjay Dhande said that across India, the report card of reserved
category students had improved. Of the 2,545 OBC candidates who qualified, 1,540
made it to the common merit list. For SC students, the figure was 122 out of 1,950,
and for ST ones, 33 out of 645.
The phenomenon reflected in seat allocation: at least 20% reserved category candidates
did not use marks relaxation to get seats.
The first round of seat allotment at all the IIT's' closed on Tuesday.
In all, 13,197 candidates had qualified for the JEE-2011 counseling (seat allocation)
process; 9,319 candidates were allotted seats, 6,348 of them at the seven old IITs,
and the rest in the new institutes. But 3,878 candidates could not get seats due
to various reasons, according to a press note from IIT-Kanpur.
