Internal and practical exams for science students to go online from next year
The University of Pune (UoP) is now ready to conduct online
internal and practical examinations from the next academic year. An eight-member
committee formed in August 2011 has come up with a plan to introduce online exams
for the students of the faculty of science in all the colleges affiliated to UoP.
The committee had selected faculty members from the Faculty of Science (FoS) that
included FoS Dean K. C. Mohite, Physics department head Pandit Vidyasagar, Dilip
Dhawale from the chemistry department, H. S. Patil from Baramati, Vilas Kharat from
the department of computer science, B. G. Wagh from Nashik, Sharad Gore from the Statistics
department and Sham Diwanay from the Department of Microbiology, Garware College.
The motive behind making the exams online was to prevent mass copying and reduce
the discrepancies during paper evaluation. Mohite said, "The idea behind introducing
online exams for the science stream in the affiliated colleges has been in the pipeline
for quite sometime. However, we are planning to introduce the exam in the faculties
of statistics, physics, electronics, master as well as bachelors of computer sciences
and master of computer applications."
The question papers of each of the science faculties are divided into objective
answers, descriptive answers and problem solving. Currently, the UoP has all the
facilities to hold online exams for both objective-type questions and problem solving.
"However, making the descriptive answers online can be a bit tricky as such questions
do not have fixed answers. We are working on the logistics. We plan to introduce
the exam on a trial basis for the internal exams that will be held in January and
February," added Mohite.
