Career counseling to be made mandatory for PU IInd Year students
Students of Pre-University Colleges will undergo compulsory
career counseling from this academic year. The department of Pre-university education
has decided to make it mandatory for the PU colleges to conduct career counseling
for their second year students.
Sources in the Department confirmed the move and said, "The Primary and Secondary
Education Minister wants us to introduce career counseling from this year. Following
his directions, we are working out a plan."
"There is a need for career counseling at the PU level. Most students are confused
on what to do after PU. A majority of students do not have information about career
alternatives of Engineering and Medicine. In this background, we thought career
counseling should be introduced at all PU colleges to help these students," primary
and secondary Education Minister Vishveshwar Hegde Kageri said.
Career counseling will be compulsory only at State Government PU colleges this year.
It will be made mandatory at all colleges affiliated with the department from the
next year. "We will announce it this year and ask Government PU colleges to implement
it. Other interested colleges too can introduce it this year. But from next year
it will be mandatory in all PU colleges," Kageri said.
"There are a lot of opportunities for students in Commerce and Arts streams. But
students appear to be attracted only towards Engineering and Medicine courses. A
career should be chosen based on students' interest in it, not on the demand it
has or the interest of parents," Kageri said. The minister was of the opinion that
students should first identify their field of interest and then choose to make a
career out of it.
Career counseling will be conducted in the middle of the year. Colleges can invite
career counselors or let subject experts from their own institutions to conduct
counseling.
