Students in the Karnataka state’s engineering colleges can
expect to get rewarded for 100% attendance. The reward, set to be made this academic
year onwards, will be announced later.
Announcing this on Tuesday (16th August), in an event organised by the Karnataka
Examinations Authority (KEA), higher education minister VS Acharya said, "To encourage
students to be regular to college, we will start an incentive programme. The file
is being processed."
The event was held to felicitate rank holders in diploma courses who are taking
engineering seats through lateral entry.
Mean while, the department is under pressure from students to reduce the percentage
of mandatory attendance for engineering courses. As of now, students have to be
present for 80% of classes to qualify for taking the examinations.
"There is pressure on us to reduce the mandatory attendance by 10%," Acharya said.
However, he confirmed that there will not be any changes in the existing attendance
criterion.
"It is necessary for the students to attend both theory and practical classes. If
they miss out on any one of these, it will be difficult for them to cope with work
and studies later," the minister for higher education said.
10% more seats under lateral entry: Starting this academic year, 20% seats will
be reserved for diploma students who get into the third semester of engineering
courses through lateral entry. Till 2010, seats reserved for lateral entry students
were 10%. This year, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has revised
it and fixed it to 20%.
Diploma rank holders felicitated: The first 13 rank holders in diploma
courses were felicitated by the KEA on Tuesday (16th August). It awarded 15,000
to each student and along with that, Indian Bank too gave 15,000 to each one of
them. It also announced that the bank would bear the education expenses of all these
students till they complete their engineering.
