Parents up in arms against Common Med Entrance Test

The Medical Council of India (MCI) will conduct the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for undergraduates - MBBS

Parents against Common Medical Test

Parents of Class 12 science students in the city have joined hands to protest against the common national medical entrance test for admission to undergraduate medical courses.

The Medical Council of India (MCI) will conduct the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for undergraduates (NEET-UG) for admission to MBBS courses next year as per a Supreme Court directive. About 12 parents, mostly doctors from Ghatkopar, are garnering support against the centre's decision. Till now, the state conducted its own entrance test, MHCET; it was based on the Class 12 HSC syllabus. The NEET will be conducted based on a core syllabus prepared by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT).

"Our children have been preparing for the CET based on the HSC syllabus. Now, how can they change their preparation pattern?" said Padmini Hariani, a parent. "We are planning to start a signature campaign," she added. While parents are fretting, sources in the government said that they have not received any official communication.
"The aim is to conduct the exam next year but we have not yet finalised the date. We are still in the process of collating feedback from various stakeholders," said Dr. Rajiv Yeravdekar, member of the board of governors, MCI.
The MCI has put up the syllabus on its website for feedback till August 11.
