Many student skip the one-year rural service by giving the excuse that they are
preparing for the entrance for super specialty postgraduate course. We have put
a ceiling on the number of attempts.
Medical students from Maharashtra will now be allowed only
two attempts for the super specialty entrance examination for admission to postgraduate
courses.
Further attempts will be permitted only after the students put in the mandatory
one-year service in rural areas. Earlier, there was no limit on the number of attempts
for the entrance examination. Also, students would often avoid the rural stint saying
they were preparing for the exam. According to a government resolution in 2007,
a student seeking admission to the MBBS course has to sign a bond of 
5 lakh,
while the amount is 50 lakh for postgraduate courses.
A student want to skip the rural service stands to forfeit the bond amount. Pravin
Shingare, director of the Directorate of Medical Education and Research, said: Many
students skip the one-year rural service by giving the excuse that they are preparing
for the entrance for super specialty postgraduate course. We have put a ceiling
on the number of attempts. The state has clarified that there is no limit on the
number of attempts for students from outside the state.
No NEET in 2012-13:
Students can heave a sigh of relief as the Centre has directed the Medical Council
of India (MCI) not to implement the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET)
for the 2012-13 academic year. A division bench of Justice Dhananjay Chandrachud
and Justice Amjad Sayed on 16th Monday heard petitions challenging MCI notifications
prescribing and finalizing the NEET syllabus for 2012-13.
The pleas said “states were having difficulty in implementing it this year”. The
ministry has decided to introduce NEET in the 2013-14 academic year and directed
the MCI to make suitable amendments. MCI advocate Ganesh Gole said “the council
has taken steps in this regard”. The judges disposed of the petitions saying they
need not entertain the pleas at this stage.
