IIM-A to revive its special courses for babus

Special Courses in IIM-A

The Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) is likely to relaunch its post-graduate programme on Public Management Policy (PGPPMP), that was designed for bureaucrats and civil servants from the academic year 2012. The one-year full-time residential programme, aimed at creating a platform for dialogue in framing government policies was put on hold in 2009-10 for two academic sessions.

PGP-PMP is likely to be revived from the next academic year. While there has not been any official communication yet, there are chances that the course may be offered from next year, a faculty member told TOI.
A committee set up by the institute in 2010 has reviewed the entire package. Samir Barua, director, IIM-A, said, the committee that reviewed the programme has submitted a report, which will be considered by the faculty and board before any decision is taken.

Launched in 2007 as part of IIM-As Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government department of personnel and training (DoPT), the fee of some participants was partly funded by DoPT.
When PGP-PMP was launched, the fee was pegged at Rs. 8 lakh for government-sponsored candidates. The institute decided to raise the fees to Rs. 12 lakh in 2008-09 batches and to Rs. 20 lakh for the 2009-10 batches. But the proposal to review the fee for sponsored candidates was not accepted by the government, which insisted on staying at Rs 8 lakh, thus making it expensive for IIM-A.
The programme could not be renewed in 2010 as DoPT was not ready to accept the fees proposed by IIM-A for the programme. Apart from the course and fee structure, there were other reasons like high running costs and waning interest of the government. The government did not send or sponsor many officials who could influence decision making, the faculty added.

The courses first batch in 2007-08 had 33 participants, of which 12 were government sponsored candidates. The second batch of 2008-09 had 39 participants, of which 20 were sponsored and out of 30 participants for the 2009-10 batch, 19 were sponsored.
The institute is also reviewing its programme for executives (PGPX) officially for the first time this year to check the load and quality of the programme content.
