State may not get new degree colleges this year
For the second year in a row, the state government is not
likely to allow any new traditional arts, science or commerce colleges to begin
operations.
Applications had poured in after the government did not permit any new institutes
to start last year.
Put together, applications from universities across the state crossed over a thousand.
After poring over them, the higher and technical education department forwarded
close to 400 applications to the chief ministers (CM) office for approval. The CM
is yet to give his final word on the proposals.
Most college managements wanted to set up commerce colleges; the bulk of applications
had come from Nagpur, Pune and Mumbai.
Existing colleges which had applied to the government for expanding capacity and
starting new courses were given permission.
Every year, the higher and technical education department scrutinizes
the applications it receives and forwards the eligible ones to the CMs office. There
after, the CM takes the final call. But classes at degree colleges have long begun
and even if a go-ahead is granted, the same will be for the next academic year.
There are several colleges that are ready to start operations this year, said a
source from the CMs office.
