The students of National Institute of Design (NID) are not
immune to the excitement of Uttarayan that has built up among the city’s residents.
The students have designed kites depicting various characteristics of Gujarat, sending
a message to people as well as innovative ones.
Post-graduate students from the department of Toy and Game Design formed four teams
to showcase their design prowess. One of the teams consisting of two students, Pavithra
and Parijata Jain, has made several kites highlighting characteristics of the state.
Their collection includes a kite which when flown, the spectators will be able to
see only a silhouette of the Sidi Saiyed jali, a kite with the Gujarat tourism logo
and one flaunting the states famous patola-print. A common feature of these kites
is the use of fabric. Faculty Gayatri Menon, who is coordinating the workshop for
making kites, said, A part of the idea for the workshop was to facilitate students
from various parts of the country in understanding the culture and characteristics
of the city and the state.
Since textile is a significant part of Ahmedabad, the students have been instructed
to focus on using fabric for making their kites. Another group of students have
designed a kite out of fabric and bamboo. When flown, the kite looks like an eye
looking back at its flyer from the skies. Abi Paul, member of the team who has made
the kite, said "Ours is symbolic". When flown in large numbers, the eyes in the
sky will give a feeling that various eyes are constantly watching you. Other teams
have made kites shaped like and having characteristics of hot air balloons, and
kites designed to fly exceptionally high.
DAIICT students to celebrate Makar Sankranti:
Students of Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology
(DAIICT), who are not going home during the short Uttarayan break, will join in
during the festivities. Around 200 students who will remain in the campus will indulge
in different traditional celebrations of Uttarayan. Talking about the arrangements,
a student, Ankur Singhal, said, We will be getting together to fly kites and distribute
sweets. We are planning for a bonfire in the evening as well.
