An exhibition of comics called ‘Graphic Narrative Project’
was launched at National Institute of Design (NID). The exhibition, which
will continue till October 4, jointly hosted by NID and Alliance Franchised Ahmedabad,
witnessed a panel discussion upon storytelling and animation. The discussion brought
up issues in the area of illustrations and comics like the limited style of storytelling
and the need to explore newer ways.
Faculty of film and video at NID Arun Gupta underlined that the basic requirement
for effective storytelling is to have interest in life and look beyond what one
generally sees. "Many of us don’t even read the morning papers or peep over the
wall," said Gupta pointing to the contemporary issues amongst students.
The issue of stereotypes of story telling and illustration was also discussed at
the event. While Margie Shashtri, a representative of the Amar Chitra Katha, talked
about the difficulties of adopting multiple styles of narratives Gupta pointed out
how South Indian films always have fair north Indian heroines.
Faculty of animation at NID Sekhar Mukherjee said, "When you sit down to work, you
have to think about the censorship, the audience and then all the all possible effects
and consequences. Then, you see your story getting squeezed and dripping away."
