Say teachers about semester system based textbooks of class XI Science stream
With the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education
Board (GSHSEB) introducing semester system in HSC Science stream from this academic
year, teachers feel that the newly structured syllabus will benefit the students.
Devyani Patel, a higher secondary school teacher of NV Vidya Mandir School, said
that three new chapters have been introduced in the biology textbook this year.
"The syllabus of the book has been slightly changed. But overall, the textbook is
very good, due to which the passing ratio of the students will increase," Patel
felt.
The physics textbook, which till last year had 16 chapters, has been divided into
eight chapters each for two semesters. Speaking to DNA, member of the author committee
of the physics textbook and a teacher at Ankur School, Jayesh Purohit said, "One
of the best things about the book is that the tough syllabus has been split into
equal parts, which will benefit the students. Also, previous methods involved more
of rote learning, which we have tried to eliminate this year by making the syllabus
simpler."
Meanwhile, the chemistry book has similar chapters as compared to last year, although
with new literature. "The new literature has been adopted from NCERT books. The
diagrams and the colorful graphics will also interest the students. Despite this,
there are still some printing mistakes in the book," said another teacher Mukesh
Otiya.
However, while physics and biology have received kudos from the teachers, the math's
text book for the first semester has certain drawbacks, said teachers. The book,
with 10 chapters, does not have model question papers, which has irked some teachers.
Moreover, the head chief coordinator of textbooks, GSHSEB, Narendra Yadav said that
the book also contains some topics which are not useful in engineering or any field.
"Also, the book has uneven distribution of marks. One chapter that is 61 pages long
has a weightage of five marks, while another chapter of 28 pages has a weightage
of 12 marks," he said, adding that he had complained about the same to the education
board.
