New Medical College in Himachal to open in 2012
An upcoming Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC)
medical college and hospital in Himachal Pradesh would start its admission process
in 2012. The ESIC medical college in Mandi town is expected to start functioning
from the academic session of 2012-13, said Education Minister
Mr. I D Dhiman.
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister, Prof. Prem Kumar Dhumal,
alongwith Union Minister of Labour and Employment, Oscar Fernades, laid the foundation
stone of the central government-funded medical college and hospital on Feb 23, 2009.
At the stone laying ceremony, Fernandes announced that the 500-bed medical hospital-cum-college
would be completed by 2010-2011 with an outlay of Rs. 10 billion.
It was joint endeavour (an effort to do or attain something) of Centre and the State
Government to start ESI Hospital and Medical College
in district Mandi. The institution would be instrumental in providing specialized
medical services to the common people. The hospital would provide medical services
not only to those who are covered under the ESIC social security scheme but also
to others. There would be 100 seats each in the medical college and the nursing
school. 40 percent of the seats in these courses would be reserved for students
from the state.
The ESIC would sign a bond with medical students to make it mandatory for them to
work in its hospitals for at least five years.
