To study the proposed National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for Gujarat
Though the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) will
be held across India exclusively for admission to medical colleges, the students
from the state of Gujarat will find it to be another added burden to the string
of exams they will have to take for admission to professional courses in the state.
This is because if the students want admission in dental and paramedical courses
in Gujarat, they will need to have scores of the local entrance exam GujCET as well.
This effectively means that even if Gujarat adopts NEET from May 2013 and not this
year, the students in the future will have to appear for six different exams just
to get their HSC (science) scores and the scores of the qualifying entrance tests
as well to compete for admissions in professional courses.
"On one hand, the education department says that they want to decrease the burden
on students but if you consider the semester system introduced in class XI and XII
science from this year, the students will give four board exams and two entrance
exams namely NEET and GujCET for admission in professional courses in the B group.
If the students have also taken A group, the number if entrance tests will be much
higher", said Riddhi Patel, parent of a class XI science student.
Earlier, officials in the education department said that in the meeting
held to discuss NEET held in January this year in Hyderabad, it was discussed that
dental and paramedical courses should also be covered by this test. But it was held
that NEET will be exclusively for medical admissions.
