Smart card will act as an identity card, library card, ATM card and a card through
which students can pay their mess bills
A multi-functional smart card has been introduced for students
of Expert PU Science College in Mangalore in association with Indian Overseas Bank.
The process of issuing cards, which is already on, is expected to be completed in
10 days.
Prof Narendra L Nayak, the chairman of Expert Group of Institutions, told Bangalore
Mirror that the smart card will act as an identity card, library card, ATM card
and a card through which students can pay their mess bills.
I was against its introduction an attendance card because I wanted teachers to call
out names of student’s everyday. It helps teachers in knowing students better, Nayak
said.
Smart cards in colleges may be common in big cities, but this is probably the first
time that such cards are being introduced in a PU College of Mangalore, he said.
Expert PU College was perhaps the first college in Mangalore to introduce uniforms
for students and CCTVs in the campus.
While most colleges follow the practice of sending an SMS to parents in case a student
is absent from class, or expect students to submit a leave letter, at Expert, the
student can report back to class the next day only if he/she is accompanied by the
parent or guardian to the college. In case of outstation students, parents need
to explain the reason for their wards absence through the telephone.
