It was recognised under Vision 2020 programme during abdul kalam's term
A feat indeed. Manipal Life Science Centre (MLSC)-which is
just six-years-old-has been ranked No. 1 in the state and secured the third rank
in a national-level survey published in the latest issue of Biospectrum, a monthly
journal dedicated to biotechnology.
A biotech research hub, the MLSC is among the country's youngest biotech schools,
but how did it manage to secure the top-notch slot? "That's because our research
topics are new, we choose emerging fields for our research studies. For example,
we are working on 'human variations' to find out the reasons why two individuals
are different," said Satyamurthy, director of the institution. The institution,
which comes under the Manipal University, was one of the ten centres recognised
under the Vision 2020 programme of former president APJ Abdul Kalam.
MLSC was working on stem cells, pharmaco-genomics, radiation biology, human genetics,
epigenetics, eye disorders, traditional knowledge and ageing, besides cancer, diabetes,
asthma, schizophrenia and bipolar disorders. Its research programmes are funded
by both the government and industry.
Biospectrum examined parameters like faculty strength, the amount of interaction
with the industry, infrastructure, placement and research output, among others,
for the ranking. Sastra University, Thanjavur, and Jaypee University of Information
Technology, Solan, secured the first and second places, respectively
