MBA Colleges are everywhere
Spurred by a rising demand for an
MBA degree course; this industry grew to double its size in four years. The
statistics of its growth summarize the story of management education in the country.
In just four years, the number of colleges providing a master in management in India
grew by 70%. In Karnataka, it doubled.
According to an assessment by the All India Management Association (AIMA), the apex
body, India has around 3,150 MBA colleges, of which 2,100 are approved by the All
India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and 1,050 are autonomous colleges.
In 2007, the total number was 1,850, showing a growth curve of almost 70%.
Karnataka is a major contributor to the rise of MBA colleges in the country, with
the third highest number of MBA colleges. It has 198 AICTE and 105 autonomous colleges,
totaling 303 MBA colleges. Nine new colleges are opening shop this year. In 2007,
the figure was 145, taking the increase to a little more than 100%.
As supply overshot demand, the number of seats going a begging also rose in the
state.
Last year, around 30% of colleges offering MBA in the city surrendered their management
seats to the government as they could not find takers.
