Eligibility:

degree programs, the National Council of Hotel Management and Catering Technology
(NCHMCT) conducts an entrance test. Certificate courses of short durations are also
offered in cookery science and food processing. One can go for specializations in
any of the 3 areas such as hot kitchen, cold kitchen, and bakery & confectionery.
Scope:
Post master training of
pastry chef course, one can look at working with up-market restaurants,
hotels, cruise liners or even starting one's own business. A degree or diploma certificate
in food craft, food production, food and beverage service or bakery and confectionery
opens up many employment avenues which are varied and interesting.
One can find job in hotel/restaurant, air catering, railway catering, army catering,
food processing companies, confectioneries, theme restaurants, malls, base kitchens,
private hospitals, cruise liners, etc. One can also become a ‘food writer’. One
can try one's hand at teaching. With Indian food becoming a craze overseas, the
demand for Indian chefs is on the rise. Now there are many economy hotels too, who
employ chefs.
Remuneration:
The pay scales may vary from place to place. A new entrant can earn about
Rs. 10,000 - 15,000 per month. After gaining 5-7 years of experience one can earn
Rs. 5,00,000 – 7,00,000 per annum. As you reach to the top and become the Executive
chef in 5 star or 7 star hotels, your salary can be anything between Rs. 1 lakh
- 2 lakh per month.
