London students join hands with NIDians for Special Project
Students of the National Institute of Design (NID)
have collaborated with the Innovation Design Engineering
(IDE) department of the Royal College of Art (RCA)
and Imperial College London (ICL) in the 'Go Global'
project which will culminate on 9 April. The project had begun on March 21. Themed
'Craftology', it aims to explore the concept of technology-enhanced craft.
Sixty students took part in this collaborative project of cross-cultural inter-disciplinary
groups. The students have been divided into 12 groups of 5 each.
According to Professor Ramakrishna Rao, coordinator, furniture and interior design
at NID, "These students worked together for three weeks and will present the final
outcome of their research findings and solutions. Each of these groups has a set
of ideas which they will share with the audience and other students."
The project presentation will be followed by poster and concept exhibition which
is also a creation of these students.
The students were asked to work on five themes :
- People craft which involved visiting NGOs and slum areas.
- Future craft which explains how future craft practices can help the present.
- Contextual craft which looks at the urban and rural location of crafts and the probable
new locations for craft-making and living.
- Technology craft which involved technology.
- Engineering enhanced craft through new materials, processes, communications and
logistics and enterprise craft.
