State has highest no. of illegal technical and mgmt institutes
Maharashtra has the dubious honour of having the largest
number of illegal institutes conducting technical and management courses, which
have not been approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
A report submitted by the AICTE to the Union ministry of human resources and development
led by Kapil Sibal says that of the 348 unapproved technical and management institutions
across India, 75 are in Maharashtra. In other words, the state accounts for 22%
of unapproved institutes in the country.
AICTE has now reportedly asked the state government to initiate criminal proceedings
against erring institutions, which have around 4,000 engineering and management
students on their rolls. By rule, all technical and management institutions across
the country need to get an AICTE approval before conducting classes. A senior higher
and technical education department official, however, said it is the responsibility
of AICTE and the University Grants Commission to identify unapproved institutions.
We get information on fake universities, illegal and unapproved technical and management
colleges, etc and forward the data to AICTE, which is the competent authority. We
have no authority to initiate proceedings against such institutions, he said.
According to the official, AICTE has issued show cause notices to the managements
of these unapproved institutions and have also cautioned students not to seek seats
in the courses they offer. We have asked students to ensure that the institution
they are seeking admission in has AICTEs seal of approval, and that the courses
offered are recognized under the relevant laws, he said.
