that the government should revoke the order, at least for this year, and allow the
university to fill in the vacancies as it did earlier.
The Jadavpur University executive council in its meeting
on Tuesday (30th Aug.) took note of the government order regarding filling up of
the vacant seats in the engineering faculty, but observed that the decision
would go against natural justice as all the students who have taken admission did
so on the basis of the JEE merit list.
However, the university made it clear that it was not going on the war path with
the state government. A senior JU council member referred to the universities compliance
with an earlier government order urging the university to increase seats. Accordingly,
the university has enhanced the intake by 17-20%. But trying to implement this
latest order might create unrest among students on the campus. Plus, it could be
construed as a dilution of the university regulations, the member said.
Members in the EC meeting, however, held that the university should take all measures
to see that not a single seat is left vacant. Merit based admission based on the
JEE list should be followed to fill up the vacant seats within a stipulated time
period, so that new entrants do not miss classes and workshops in the semester,
a JU official said.

Bengal Engineering and Science University (Besu), too, held their executive council
meeting on Tuesday. The midterm is beginning from September and we cannot change
the academic calendar. The institute also does not want to compromise on the quality
of students. The remaining seats can be filled up from the central governments quota.
In the second year, GELET students take admissions over and above the capacity.
The government should consider the situation and revoke its order if possible for
this current academic year, said an EC member.
Both Besu and JU have formally informed the government about the decision and observations
of their respective ECs.

their stand, said a higher education department official.
