From 2012, counseling of students who crack the Joint Entrance
Examination will be held online, CM Mamata Banerjee has said. She announced
this on Monday after there was chaos at the Salt Lake Stadium during counseling

Monday was the first day of the counseling session of this year's JEE. While 1.10
lakh students had appeared for the examination, around 90,000 students cracked it.
Students whose family income is less than Rs. 2.5 lakh a year were asked to bring
their documents on Monday at the counseling session for availing scholarships.
But chaos broke out when the authorities declared late in the evening that they
were unable to attend all the students. Nearly 1,200 students were in the queue
when the process had to be stopped for the day. Peeved with this, students and their
family members allegedly ransacked the room where the counseling session was going
on.
Allegations also surfaced that police had to resort to lathi charge to disperse
the irate (angry) students. Police officers however refuted the charge.
In West Midnapore, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her anguish and said,
"The incident was uncalled for. I have warned the joint entrance council. From next
year the counseling process would be held online."
