About the institution:
The University started its correspondence education on
March 24, 1971. Earlier known as the Directorate of Correspondence Courses,
in 1985 it was upgraded as the Directorate of Distance Education and renamed as
the Institute of Distance Education in 1993. In 2008-09, it was renamed the Institute
of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL). Since its inception, IDOL has been introducing
various traditional degree courses as well as technical and professional courses.
Fees range:
- Rs. 2350 for the BA first two years
- Rs. 2650 for the BA third year
- Reserved category Rs.120 for the first two years and Rs. 370 for the third year
- M.A part I Rs. 5,500, part II Rs. 4,300
- M.A education part I Rs. 7,500, part II Rs. 6,000
- M.A/M.Sc mathematics Rs. 5400, part II Rs. 4,300
- M.Com part I Rs. 5,300, part II Rs. 4,300
- PGDFM Rs. 3,600 + Rs. 3,000
- PGDORM Rs. 3,600 + Rs. 3000
- B.Sc computer science Rs. 11,250 a year
- B.Sc IT Rs. 12,250 for the first two years and Rs. 12,350 for third year
- M.Sc computer Rs. 23,000 for two years
- M.Sc IT Rs. 12,000 + Rs. 10,800
- MCA Rs. 15,000 average for each year
Support systems/ facilities for students:
The institute provides a reading hall and library facility for students
at its building at Vidyanagari. During the examinations, the reading hall is open
from 8am to 8pm Monday to Saturday except on the second
and fourth Monday.
The AV Centre has more than 100 syllabus-oriented/ curriculum-based video cassettes
on commerce and economics. A catalogue of the cassettes is available at the centre.
study centers: The institute
organizes guidance lectures under personal contact programmes (PCPs) in certain
subjects in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane for the benefit of students, generally
in the evening from 6pm to 8pm or sometimes on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
Though the lectures are not compulsory, it is an attempt to provide guidance to
students in solving their academic difficulties. These personal contact programmes
are generally conducted one or two weeks before the examination. There are more
than 20 such centers across Mumbai.
Enrollment: Admissions start
in July and are held in two phases that last till September. Courses start in September
or October.
Approval from DEC: All courses
offered by the institute are approved by the Distance Education Council, New Delhi.
