Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee – IITR as it is known is the 7th
IIT setup in the country after IIT Kharagpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur,
IIT Delhi and IIT Guwahati. IIT Roorkee was formerly known as University of Roorkee
and was established in the year 1847. It was renamed as Thomson College of Civil
Engineering in the year 1854. In 1949 it was given the status of University and
named as University of Roorkee. In 2001, an ordinance issued by the Government of
India, declared it as the 7th Indian Institute of Technology.

IIT Roorkee offers various undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses in Engineering,
Technology, Applied Science, and Management. It runs 11 undergraduate, 5 integrated
dual degree, 3 integrated M.Tech, 3 integrated M.Sc, 61 Postgraduate and several
doctorate programs.
IIT Roorkee has been ranked 401-450 by the QS World University
Ranking and no 56 in the QS Asian University Rankings. In India, it has been ranked
no 5 by India Today and no 6 by Outlook India for the year 2011. It has been ranked
no 7 in the Mint Government College survey for the year 2009.
