The small satellite will piggyback with two other nano satellites 10-kg SRMSat built
by students and teachers of SRM University, Chennai
India’s first IIT-made satellite is set to blast off by next
month or October from Sriharikota. The 3-kg Jugnu is designed and developed by students
and staff of IIT Kanpur. Development began in 2008.
The small satellite will piggyback with two other nano satellites 10-kg SRMSat built
by students and teachers of SRM University, Chennai, and another from Luxembourgon
the 500-kg Indo-French Megha Tropiques satellite that will undertake atmospheric
studies.
The four-stage Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) rocket will carry these satellites.
It promises to be a historic mission because it will be the first time a satellite
built by IIT is launched, said an Isro official. The images Jugnu transmits will
help in studying vegetation and water bodies.
