Don't fret if you have failed to impress a potential employer at campus interview.
IITians are no better.
Data obtained from the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay
(IIT-B) shows that around 20% students in various courses remain jobless despite
a brand name and robust campus placement programmes. A campus cell coordinator admitted
that a few students lose out because of lack of good communication skills, good
or have a CGPA less than 6.
"A few students failed to get jobs mainly because they were not prepared for the
interviews. M.Phil students' campus placements remained low as they are from different
backgrounds from economics to philosophy. We need to plan separately for each of
them, "said Ravi Sinha, placement in-charge at IIT-B.
Students who are most likely to lose out at campus placements are in two-year Master
of Science, Master of Philosophy and Master of Design. Moreover, 13% of M.Tech and
10% of B.Tech students did not get jobs though they had assistance and repeated
placement attempts. "The probability of selection is much higher on campus. Once
you are out, it's difficult to get through, "said an M.Sc student who is jobless
even after a year. "I got a few offers later, but they were not so good. I am preparing
for Indian Engineering Services now, "said a 2009 batch MTech student.
But, Devang Khakhar, director of IIT-B insisted that campus placements in 2010-11
have been better than the previous year and the institute is still the first preference
for top employers. Of the 958 offers IIT-B received this year, 286 had pay packages
of Rs 8.5 lakh per annum and above.
"But the story is not the same in all the fields. There are few branches
that are losing their sheen such as aeronautical engineering, "admitted a professor
from the institute, on condition of anonymity.
