The reason for this is quite an unlikely one RTI Act! Says IIMA director Samir Barua
The Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad commenced its
flagship Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) for the academic year 2011-13
with 94.62% students from engineering backgrounds.
In the past it has been estimated that the institution attracted students from diverse
educational fields, but, after the introduction of Right to Information (RTI) Act,
this diversity is missing, as the institute has to follow certain procedures for
admission.
Talking to media persons, director of IIMA Prof Samir Barua said they used to manage
variety in the PGP batch but now the group is dominated by engineering students.
"Earlier, there was diversity in the batch. But after introduction of Right to Information
Act we have to reveal details about students. And this seems to be the reason for
increasing engineering students in PGP," said Barua. He further said that since
they have to follow certain procedures while providing admission, this compels them
to take students with the right educational background. "Engineers do well, no matter
what," he asserted.
Talking about autonomy, Barua said that the amendment of Memorandum of Association
is sanctioned by the state government and now they are waiting for the Ministry
of Human Resource Development's response.
The main features of the MoA are autonomy to appoint director and chairman
of the institute by the board of governors, setting up campus in a foreign country,
hiring foreign faculties and selling off institute's assets to fund the expenses.
