What is it?
The Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India
was established by the Government of India as an autonomous professional Institute
in 1959 to provide training, education and research facilities in cost and management
accounting. The Institute was first formed as a limited company in 1944 under the
provisions of the then companies Act 1913. The objectives of The Institute of Cost
& Work Accountants of India is promoting, regulating, and developing the profession
of Cost Accountancy.
Different stages in ICWAI Course:
There are three stages to pursue Cost Accountant course:
- Foundation Course.
- Intermediate Course.
- Final Course.

Admission to Foundation Course: Minimum qualification
is 10+2 examination or any examination equivalent thereto, recognised by the Institute.

Registration to Intermediate Course:
Minimum qualification:
Passed CWA Foundation/ Graduation in any discipline other than Fine Arts/ Foundation
(Entry Level) Part I Examination of CAT of ICWAI/Foundation (Entry Level) Part I
Examination and Competency Level Part II Examination of CAT of ICWAI.
Registration Period: A
registration is valid for a period of seven years from the date of registration.

Admission to Final Course: A student who have
passed Intermediate Examination of the Institute are eligible for admission to Final
Course.
Eligibility :
- Foundation Course:
- 17 years of age; and
- Passed Senior Secondary Examination under 10+2 scheme of a recognized Board
(Incumbents waiting for the result can
apply for provisional admission).
- Intermediate Course :
- is not less than 18 years of age and
- has passed degree Examination of any recognised University or equivalent
(Incumbents waiting
for the result can apply for provisional admission).

ICWAI Form Fees:
Prospectus and application forms (for both foundation course and intermediate course)
are available from the ICWAI Headquarters, Regional Councils and Chapter offices
spread all over the country.
The cost is as follows :
- Cash payment: Rs. 200/-
- By Post/ Courier: DD/PO – Rs. 250/- (Within India)

The ICWAI has its 71 examination centres located in various cities all over India
(Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata and Delhi has multiple centres) and two overseas centres
at Dubai and Muscat.

ICWAI Entrance Preparation
Guidelines:
- Study the question papers of previous examinations to be able to understand broad
trends of the categories.
- Based on marks allotted give weightage to each category and accordingly prepare
for the examination, spending more time and effort for important topics.
- In the case of theory subjects, focus on understanding the concepts thoroughly and
its application.
- In the case of numerical subjects, such as accountancy, costing and mathematics,
focus on understanding the methods, formulae and format of presenting the solution.
Solve as many problems as you can.
- Try joint studies with a couple of friends to be able to help one another, and in-still
competitive spirit.
Career Prospects:
It has been felt beyond doubt that there has been increasing awareness amongst the
business entrepreneurs of the most vital contribution made by cost and management
accountancy services in the business houses to the attainment of business objectives.
This has accentuated the demand for cost and management accounting services in all
the sectors of economy. Many members of the Institute are holding top management
positions, viz., Managing Director, Finance Director, Financial Controller, Chief
Accountant, Cost Controller, Marketing Manager, Chief Internal Auditor. Those managing
their own business, have found in themselves a Manager and an Accountant to control
and flourish their business. No wonder a Cost Accountant can attain the highest
ladder of professional career. There is a sustained demand for qualified, trained
and experienced cost accountants. Many members of the Institute are also engaged
in cost consultancy services and in teaching cost and management accountancy in
Universities and Colleges.
