Officials have said that the state may adopt the CMAT from 2012
The Gujarat state education department has clarified that
Gujarat will not adopt the Common Management Aptitude Test (CMAT) this year.
The exam is a common entrance test to be conducted by All India Council of Technical
Education (AICTE) for admission in management colleges all over the country. Officials
have said that the state may adopt the CMAT from next year.
Principal education secretary Hasmukh Adhia said that the state government's decision
was based on the fact that students were not completely prepared for CMAT this year.
Currently, students in other states are registering for the CMAT, but Gujarat students
had been unsure about proceeding because the state had not clarified its position.
The education department's statement has made things clear - students have to prepare
for the Gujarat Common Entrance Test (GCET) which is conducted by Gujarat Technological
University for MBA and MCA admissions.
There are 15,000-odd MBA seats in the state. Last year, 24,000 students had appeared
for the test to apply for these seats. Recently, AICTE chairman S. S. Mantha - on
a visit to Ahmedabad - had emphasized that all states would be required to adopt
the CMAT exam and no exemption would be given to any state. This had led to lot
of confusion among students in Gujarat.
Officials in the education department said that one hitch in joining the CMAT was
that it applied only to MBA colleges and the state would have had to anyway conduct
the GCET. The issue has also been represented to AICTE.
