Colleges with two shifts will have timings 7am to 1.30pm and 2pm to 8.30pm.
Gujarat University (GU) has endorsed government of Gujarat's
circular released last week with respect to change in official timings of the colleges
based on University Grants Commission's (UGC) sixth pay commission. According to
Dr. Parimal Trivedi, vice-chancellor of GU, "We are merely endorsing the change in
timings as given or circulated by government of Gujarat.
From now on, around 350 colleges under GU will follow a new time-table. A week's
time will be given to colleges to formulate or reorganise their time-table as per
the new circular." Colleges with two shifts will have timings 7am to 1.30pm and 2pm to 8.30pm.
For afternoon colleges, the timings are 12noon to 6pm and for colleges like Gujarat
College which also conduct evening classes; their timings are 5pm to 11:30pm. This change
in timings will be applicable to over 3.5 lakh students and around 6000 professors.
"Faculty is supposed to work for six-and-a-half hours of which one hour
is preparation time for them whereas the remaining five-and-a-half hours are to
be devoted to teaching. These are rules as per the UGC's sixth pay commission and
hence there would be no relaxation in timings," concluded Dr. Trivedi. When asked
to express his views on this new schedule, Harshad Patel, a professor said, "Such
change in timings will not affect professors and students as much as it will affect
colleges. Most of the commerce colleges and other colleges in the city have common
classrooms and the timings might affect them. In such colleges managing or changing
infrastructure is impossible and a 100% application of such changes is difficult."
