Mapping of urban schools on the anvil
School education minister Rajendra Darda has said that satellite
mapping of primary and secondary schools in urban areas will be taken up. It will
be akin to an exercise carried out recently to prepare a master plan for rural schools.
Darda said the government was adding final touches to the rules for implementation
of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009. The act
was notified by the central government on April 1, 2010, but the rules will lay
down the steps and procedure for implementation of various provisions under the
act in the state. The minister was in the city for a programme at the Progressive
Education Society.
One of the provisions of the RTE act stipulates that the state government identify
the number of schools. The Maharashtra government had partnered with Google Maps'
to map schools in rural areas, using satellite technology.
The exercise for urban schools will result in a master plan based on which the department
will decide where to sanction new schools.
