Government Law College (GLC) has got one more week to rework
its admission to the first year of its 5-year law course. The list has to be first
placed before the Bombay high court before implementing it.
A division bench of justices AM Khanwilkar and RY Ganoo, while granting one week's
extension to the college, also questioned its logic of discontinuing the classes.
The court was hearing several petitions and intervention applications filed in favour
and against the rework of admissions.
Last week, the high court had asked the college to rework the admissions on a petition
by a student Swati Khinvasara challenging the deduction of her 5% marks from the
total percentage of marks for students from outside Maharashtra. The court had even
termed the faculty wise admission as illegal.
Additional government pleader MD Naik sought more time, saying they were still in
the process of preparing the merit list and would take some time to finalise it.
Mukesh Vashi, advocate for Khinvasara argued that those students, who were offered
but did not take admission, should not get a chance due to reworking of merit list.
University counsel Rui Rodrigues told the court that the principal had
the power to condone up to 25% deficiency in attendance.
