General Nursing and Midwifery Course, Career and GNM College Details
Nursing duties are manifold and cover a wide range of functions and responsibilities
dependent on the level of qualification and working environment. At the initial
level, nurses are required for the bedside care of patients, while at senior level
they are required to manage special group of people like psychiatric, paediatric,
and intensive care patients which require special skills. Nursing and Midwifery
is an advanced course that specifically deals in delivering babies and providing
prenatal and postpartum care to women.
Eligibility:
The candidate should have passed HSC exam or its equivalent preferably with
science subjects (physics, chemistry and biology) with aggregate of 40% marks. Those
who have cleared HSC vocational ANM course (revised after 2001) from the school
recognized by INC are also eligible for admission to GNM Nursing Course.
Career Options:
Students of GNM nursing course can work in government or private hospitals,
nursing homes, clinics, old age homes, orphanages, military services, schools, clinics
and health departments, railways and public sector medical departments, training
institutes as educators and various other places. They can work as hospital nurses,
public health nurses, community health nurses, military nurses, educators, industrial
nurses, occupational health nurses, psychiatric nurses, paediatric nurses and orthopaedic
nurses etc.
Scope:
With an increase in health consciousness the quality of health services has also
improved. Well trained, specialized nurses are being recruited by health organizations
all over the country. Nurses - Midwives have to administer and oversee the delivery
of the baby and recognize signs and symptoms that deviate from normal conditions.
They consult physician who involves in the delivery at a later stage if needed.
In addition, Nurses-Midwives provide family planning and birth control counseling
and normal gynaecological services like physical and breast exams, pap smears and
preventive health screening. In most states, Nurses-Midwives may prescribe medications.

Remuneration:
Those who are employed by government hospitals receive a monthly salary of
Rs. 6,500 to Rs. 10,000. Those working for private hospitals or the military receive
Rs. 8,000 to Rs. 10,000. Midwives receive above Rs. 4,000 per month approximately,
plus a fixed amount per birth registered. Health workers receive between Rs. 1,000
to Rs. 2,000 per month. Nurses and Midwives have a very hectic schedule as they
have to be present for deliveries.
