Career in Film Making and Film Production
Film making is an artistic medium of expression. A director makes films to portray
different aspects of human psyche, collective consciousness and universal scenarios.
Film making involves telling a story with technical competence and creative talent.
It is a combination of history, art and aesthetics. Film maker must have imagination,
meticulous observation and sharp understanding of economics of film making. Films
include feature films, documentaries, newsreels, promotional films, TV commercials,
music videos etc. Film making is teamwork. It calls for various skilled individuals
coming together to make a film. The team consists of writer, director, cinematographer,
editor, lighting in-charge, sound recordist, producer and actor. A film maker is
like captain of a ship. He has to start at the very bottom and work his way up,
i.e. beginning with raising capital for the film to its distribution, screening
as well as all the stages of its crafting.
Eligibility:
A candidate has to be 10+2 to be eligible for a technical
course in film making. For other courses it is graduation. Duration of
film making and film production courses depends on the course one opts for and the
institution chosen. There are diploma, post diploma and even certificate courses
in film making. Specialization areas include production, direction, editing, cinematography,
film processing, animation, acting, sound engineering, make up, photography and
so on. If a candidate has to appear for technical course then he has to be a graduate
in physics. For other areas, there is no specialization.
Career Options:
There are a lot of career options after graduating from a
film making course. You can become a director, assistant director, producer,
Production manager, production assistant, editor, cinematographer, cameraman, lighting
director/technician/operator, sound recordist, scriptwriter, animator, actor, film
critic and film archivist. Candidates can find employment with film studios, production
companies, advertising agencies, and government department etc. Every field of film making course is unique and requires a thorough
knowledge and understanding of the basics.
There is wide scope in films for bright individuals. Even for acting and directing,
which are basically creative fields that require inherent talent; training helps
to hone the skills. In areas like cinematography, sound engineering and editing,
professional training is essential. With the boom in the media industry a plethora
of opportunities have opened up for film makers in India and with the multiplex
culture engulfing India, many new film makers are getting the opportunity to make
small budget movies to carve a niche for themselves in the film fraternity. Bollywood
is the ultimate destination for all film makers in India.
You can join a production house, assist a Filmmaker, work in a television channel,
ad agency or work as a freelancer producing and directing films with foreign collaboration.
If a trained film-maker is desirous of making a 'crossover' movie then he or she
can go in for collaboration with a Hollywood production house.
