More than 110 forms were filled by students seeking to fill NRI seats
Several students vying for a medical seat in the NRI quota
of three new colleges are waiting on tenterhooks since more than 20 days now.
The issue concerns 69 seats reserved for NRI students at the Sola Medical College,
Gotri Medical College and Cancer Hospital and Medical College.
Of the 20 students who were called for admission on Friday(2nd Sep), only two were given
admissions. The rest were asked to wait for the outcome of the high court petition.
The court will hear the plea of the students on Monday. The students have challenged
the admission for NRI students.
"More than 110 forms were filled by students seeking to fill these NRI seats. However,
according to a ruling made recently by the Gujarat HC, only genuine NRIs should
be given admission. This means that only those students are eligible for these seats
who are being sponsored to pursue the medical courses by their relatives staying
abroad," said state education department officials.
"Though officials of the Admission Committee for Medical and Paramedical
Courses have approved these admissions for NRI seats, nobody is ready to sign on
the files fearing legal problems," said government sources.
