Gujarat University (GU)- BA first semester exam for Gujarati paper cancelled
A goof up derailed the exam process at Gujarat University
(GU) on Wednesday (Dec 7). Students appearing for the BA first semester exam for
Gujarati were in for a shock. Their question papers had failed to make it to exam
centres. A subsequent inquiry revealed that the correct question paper
had not yet been printed.
On Wednesday examinees were in for a surprise. They were given the question papers
for Thursday (8th Dec). This mistake was repeated in 65 colleges, affecting 3,500
students. GU had to cancel the exam and reschedule it for December 9. The incident
annoyed the students as they raised their voices against the goof up and for being
kept on tenterhooks for an hour before the exam cancellation was announced.
This issue has got college administrations demanding their pound of flesh. Recently,
GU had imposed a
1 lakh fine on a teacher who set a paper and put the same question twice. Then there
were 10 colleges which were fined for not making exam invigilators available. We
think, now GU should initiate disciplinary action on its own administrative staff
and those responsible for this goof up which has affected so many students, said
the principal of a college that was fined recently. GU authorities are quick to take
credit for any achievements, but here the goof up seems no body’s business or responsibility,
said a student. On Wednesday at 2.30 pm when students were at their exam centres,
college authorities opened the sealed envelopes containing the question papers they
realized that instead of the Gujarati language paper, another paper had been sent
instead.
GU officials later conducted a probe into the matter and found that the paper-setter
had sent Thursday’s paper instead. We might initiate punitive action against the
paper-setter. Our probe has revealed that both the paper-setter and authorities
of the exam department were at fault. The paper-setter will be served a notice and
other officials responsible for this problem will be pulled up, said GU officials.
