‘I have been giving test series for quite some time now. Two weeks ago, I took an
exam and scored 106 because I was able to attempt only 155 questions. Today also
I took an exam. But again, because of poor time management, I was able to give time
for just 145 questions. I didn't even look at the rest of the questions. When it
comes to knowledge I have it all but I am in a position where I need over 3 hrs
to complete the paper. What should I do? How should I go about managing my time?’
Sounds familiar? This could be the story of anyone of you. However prepared you
could be, poor time management means disaster in competitive exams!
You need to be really fast while answering the questions. The best way to attain
the desired speed is to solve similar types of papers. With the help of the sample
papers, you can build various strategies and tricks about a particular type of question.
It also helps in mental coherence during main exam.
Here are a few golden rules of time management. Apply these
rules, improve your time management skills and score high :
- Reach 45 minutes before time, so that you can utilise this time to find out sitting
arrangement and to settle down.
- Once you have question paper in your hand, don’t start writing immediately. Have
a look at the instructions given at the top of the question paper. Ensure if any
new changes have been incorporated.
- Note the number of questions to be answered & marks for each question in various
sections. Allot time for each question based on distribution of marks. Decide the
questions you want to go for and concentrate on them.
- It’s always advisable to start the paper with the question that you are confident
of. But also keep in mind that you should not spend extra time on it. Usually, students
spend most of the time on the first question & run out of time at the end. This
affects the overall performance.
- Keep your watch in front of you. This helps you to keep an eye on time while answering
the questions. Many students keep their watch five to ten minutes ahead but this
can create a mess as you always have to spend at least a few extra seconds to calculate
the actual time.
- Panic and stress will lead you to mistakes. Instead of marking option A for 112th
question if you mark it for 113th, you will lose marks. While you think you marked
a correct option, the result will be different. So, don’t rush! Just check before
you mark the options.
By following these simple time management tips while writing
the paper, you will definitely score more :-)
