A good score may land you in the prestigious IIT!
Published on 2011-05-19 10:08:38: If you fare well at the initial stage of your
engineering course, irrespective of the college you are in, the
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) may soon offer you with the golden
opportunity to complete the rest of your undergraduate engineering programme in
one of its prestigious campus and also to earn the coveted Ph. D from there!
The decision was announced by a panel that was set up by the
Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry under Anil
Kakodkar (former Energy Commission Chairman) in order to create reforms
for IITs to increase the number of PhDs from there. In the process, the panel suggested
a strategy to allow the IITs to pick 2500 brilliant third year students from other
engineering colleges and give them an opportunity to study at their institutes.
As per the blueprint of the proposal, you will be allowed to complete your B.Tech
at the IITs and then to pursue a Ph.D. also.
A member of the panel said that the proposal, if implemented, would create a win-win
situation as it will open the gateway to the selected students to pursue their dream
education at the IITs and the institutes will also get talented students who are
ready to take up research studies over there.
The report has been presented before HRD Minister Kapil Sibal
last week and the students are eagerly awaiting the decision. However, several faculty
members of the IIT’s have expressed discontent with this proposal stating the incapacity
of the IITs to absorb the additional students due to excessive work burden.
In retrospect, the panel has suggested the HRD ministry to increase the annual fee
for the institutes from Rs.50, 000 to Rs.2 - 2.5 lakh.
The IITs have already increased their intake of doctoral students and have also
increased their output of PhDs to around 1000 every year.
