Diploma Students are usually granted admission in the second year of degree courses
in July
The fate of no less than 13,770 students hangs in the balance.
These are the students who have completed their diploma in engineering courses and
now wish to complete the degree courses in engineering.
Diploma students are usually granted admission in the second year of degree courses
in July. This time though, the process has got inordinately delayed. Earlier, the
process was completed after the students filed formal applications, said an official
of admission committee for professional courses (ACPC).
The reason behind this delay is an impasse. While ACPC has asked for exact percentages
of the applicants, Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has not yet come up with
the rules to govern the second-year admissions. This has stalled all diploma students
seeking admissions in degree courses.
Till last year, the rule was to take the last two semester’s theory marks of diploma
students into consideration for granting admissions in the second year of degree
courses. Though, this rule has not changed, the problem is that GTU does not give
marks, but instead adheres to a grading system which includes marks of the practical
subjects too.
The admission committee had tabled a proposal before the state government seeking
permission to allow an admission test for this process.
But the technical education board of the state education department has turned down
the request, said the ACPC official.
GTU offers a total of 8,779 seats to degree students. We have received
13,770 applications for these seats. But, now the state government has asked GTU
to submit individual marks of the students.GTU adheres to Cumulative Performance
Index which is grading the students. Said GTU official.
