Medical laboratory science combines the use of sophisticated instruments and techniques
with the application of theoretical knowledge to perform complex procedures on tissue
specimens, blood samples and other body fluids. The tests and procedures that Medical
Laboratory Technologists perform provide critical information enabling physicians
to diagnose, treat and monitor a patient's condition.
Eligibility:
HSC passed or equivalent examination from a recognized university or board.
Duration of DMLT course is 2 years. There are also other certification courses in
lab technicians which needs HSC as the eligibility. DMLT Courses are offered by
colleges, universities as well as hospitals. The hospitals are usually affiliated
with a college or university.
Career Options:
The career of lab worker depends on academic and technical skills. A certified
medical laboratory technician may find a challenging career in a hospital, private
laboratory, blood donation centers and doctor’s office. A technician can become
a technologist through further education and work experience. Laboratory technologists
can assist the doctors in taking samples, centrifuging, making slides, using specified
stains with proper guidance. Job opportunities are also available in research laboratories
and military service.

the country. The demand for lab technician has increased and India is slated to
become one of the largest single country markets for Lab technicians overseas. The

is experiencing continues to create huge demand for better health care.
Job Prospects:
The Medical Laboratory Technologists/ technician may be assigned to a specialized
area of work in a large medical lab. In small labs, they may perform a variety of
tests or all areas of lab work. They can also work as laboratory manager/ consultant/ supervisor,
health care administrator, hospital outreach coordinator, laboratory information
system analyst/ consultant, educational consultant/ coordinator/ director, health
and safety officer etc.
Remuneration:
The salary of clinical laboratory workers ranges from Rs. 6,500 – Rs. 10,000 per month in hospitals and clinics.
